Built in 1989 as part of the original Ionia Education Center, Heartlands' specialty labs are equipped with technically advanced equipment valued at $1.5 million. Heartlands, one of Michigan's outstanding career/technical educational centers, brings many specialties to the Ionia Education Center. For example, the Culinary Arts Program operates the "Class Act" restaurant, which is open to the public; Dental Occupations students partner with local dentists and agencies to provide Dental Clinic services to the uninsured; and Building Trades is completing its fifteenth new home with a market value in the $200,000 range.

Heartlands' is a "school within a school" and an outstanding partner with Ionia High School in its Career Pathways focus. Outcomes-based curriculum and competency-based testing insure that students master the objectives of their training. Upon graduation, HIT students are prepared to enter the work world or continue post-secondary education. A majority of graduates choose to continue their technical or vocational training.
Heartlands' students capture honors in regional, state and national competition among vocational students and are competitive in skill challenges sponsored by industry.
Our curriculum is continually updated to meet the demands of today's business and industry. Area professionals serve on advisory councils specific to their fields to assure that first hand information and expert guidance are given concerning current and future training needs.
